چکیده
Measurements at 8.6 GHz on TM mode superconducting niobium cavities have been carried out at SLAC in an attempt to establish definitive conditions for reproducibly attaining high peak electric and magnetic fields and high residual &Is. Four cavities, processed by techniques which insure thepresence of an oxi& layer on the niobium surface before final high temperature outgassing, have given peak magnetic fields exceeding 1000 G and corresponding peak electric fields in excess of 56 MV/m. From this and related experience it is speculated that, in order to achieve high peak fields, carbon present on the niobium surface must be removed through the formation of volatile compounds with oxygen or fluorine during high temperature processing. Data are also presented on the effect on rf properties of exposure at room temperature to various gases. Measurements on anodized cavities are briefly discussed.

Measurements at Slac on Superconducting Niobium Cavities and Structures
Tests are continuing at SLAC on superconducting niobium cavities and structures at Sand X-band frequencies. Peak electric and magnetic fields on the order of 20 MV/m and 400 G have been obtained in a TM mode cavity at 2.85 GHz with unloaded Q’s at high fields on the order of 1010. These fields and Q’s are adequate for superconducting RF systems for high energy storage rings and recirculating li...

The program of measurements at SLAC on superconduct. I ;r. ing niobium cavities is described. Results for TE and TM mode X-band cavities are presented. An RF magnetic breskdown field of 960 gauss and Q values greater than 1011 were measured for an electron beam welded TEOII mode cavity at ‘I 10.5 GHz. The best result for a TM mode cavity was a Q of 1.4 x log and a breakdown field of 360 gauss, ...

We report on the L-band RF power distribution system (PDS) developed at SLAC for Fermilab’s NML superconducting test accelerator facility. The makeup of the system, which allows tailoring of the power distribution to cavities by pairs, is briefly described. Cold test measurements of the system and the results of high power processing are presented. We also investigate the feasibility of elimina...

Current superconducting cavities are generally made of solid Niobium. A possibility to reduce cost as well as increase the quality factor and/or accelerating fields is to use thin film coated cavities. Apart from Niobium thin films, other substances such as Magnesium diboride, Niobium nitride and Niobium-tin are promising candidates. Measuring the RF-properties of superconducting thin films, sp...

In an attempt to correlate the performance of superconducting radiofrequency cavities made of niobium with the superconducting properties, we present the results of the magnetization and ac susceptibility of the niobium used in the superconducting radiofrequency cavity fabrication. The samples were subjected to buffer chemical polishing (BCP) surface and high temperature heat treatments, typica...
